Fyffe (14-0) captures its sixth AHSAA blue map trophy since 2014 and has won four of the last five Class 2A or 3A championships. The details:
AHSAA Class 2A Football ChampionshipFyffe got punched in the mouth on its first defensive possession but Brodie Hicks and company had more than enough haymakers of their own to reclaim their rightful place as state champion.
“How wonderful, give God the glory and this team always does,” Fyffe coach Paul Benefield said. “They work extremely hard and glad to see the smiles on their faces and get a reward for all they do.” Fyffe scored on its next three drives, building a 19-8 lead late in the opening quarter on 6-yard and 1-yard scoring runs by Hicks. The first touchdown was the result of a fumble by B.B. Comer quarterback Devin Harvey and the second came on a kickoff recovery with no Tigers’ players touching the ball and Fyffe recovering outside the red zone.
Fyffe and B.B. Comer matched one another with three complete drives in the second half, but the Red Devils were able to possess the ball for 18:03 as they limited the Tigers’ opportunities late. Hicks scored his fourth and fifth touchdowns of the game in the second half, leading Fyffe on two separate and grueling 11-play drives, capping the first with a 19-yard scoring run and closing out the Red Devil scoring on a 7-yard run to put the Red Devils up 40-22 with less than four minutes remaining.
He was named Class 2A MVP and is the fifth player to account for five touchdowns in a title game this week, joining Thompson’s Trent Seaborn, St. James’ KJ Jackson, Leroy’s Brayden Huebner and Ramsay’s Ashton Ashford. Hicks finishes his final prep season with 186 rushing attempts for 1,425 yards and 23 touchdowns.
