The latest version of the project is angling to be the most expensive road construction project in Alabama history. And tolls remain as a key source of financing what is now a $2.7 billion project to build a new 215-foot-tall bridge over the Mobile River and to rebuild a new elevated Bayway.

State Senator Greg Albritton, R-Atmore, said he believes the current iteration of the I-10 project “appears to be the exact same plan with the exact same toll” as the 2019 version. The Wallace Tunnel was proposed to be tolled in the 2019 plan, which meant an existing roadway would be levied a toll to prevent toll avoidance once the I-10 project was completed. Under the new version, no existing roadway – the Wallace or Bankhead tunnels, the Africatown USA Bridge, and the Spanish Fort Causeway – will be tolled. Only new infrastructure will be assessed a toll.
