Following the abrupt closure of Birmingham culinary landmark Bogue’s Restaurant, a fundraising drive has been started to benefit longtime employee “Miss Ella” Irby. The drive quickly scorched past its $500 goal. As of Sunday, pledges totaled nearly $3,000.

Launched on Friday with a modest $500 goal, the drive quickly scorched past that. As of early Sunday afternoon, pledges totaled nearly $3,000.

The shutdown took patrons by surprise and appeared to come without notice or comment from the restaurant’s owners. Irby told in early September that the restaurant last served customers in late August. Irby, whose duties included making the venue’s famed sweet rolls, said she planned to retire after more than 40 years with Bogue’s.that she had launched the effort, with Irby’s permission, “to allow the community to show our appreciation and love for Mrs. Ella … she deserves all of the love and recognition we can throw her way.

“She is perhaps known best for her sweet rolls but what many do not know about her is that she has 3 adult children including one who is disabled, 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild ,” wrote Morgan. “While Mrs. Ella’s husband spends his days taking care of their disabled son, Mrs. Ella spent her days taking care of us at Bogue’s. … Her love for her customers would shine with a greeting by name or well wishes for family and friends.
