More than two-thirds of the country's most populous cities have seen more homicides in 2021 than last year.
Fueled by what both authorities and community leaders say is the easy access to guns, Austin has recorded 88 homicides so far this year, shattering the previous high of 59 in 1984. Chris Harris, a member of the Austin Justice Coalition, a community-led organization addressing criminal justice reform as well as economic and social justice, said most of the violent incidents that occur in the city involve people"who know each other.
There is no federal database of gun sales, but other independent surveys have found that gun sales have soared during the Covid-19 pandemic. Homicides in 22 US cities continue to rise in 2021 but at a slower pace, report says With just three weeks remaining in 2021, it seems almost certain that there will be more murders this year than last. However, the rate of increase in homicides does appear to be slowing.
