Coming of age between the deaths of Trayvon Martin and George Floyd has impacted a whole generation of Black youth

As a result, a familiar cycle began to repeat itself. Hashtags started to trend.and petitions began making the rounds. People split hairs, deeming some cases more important than others; dinner table conversations with family members and friends got struck up again about how fatigued we all are. But this time, I am older. This ordeal has been going on for almost a decade in the lives of my generation. It is exhausting.

I inhaled and exhaled before speaking. My voice quivered. I told her I was angry, but also very scared. I expressed that I had experienced racism before . I recalled all of the instances that she and my dad had recounted for me of their experiences with racism. But I had never seen racism on such a large scale before.

With those words, we arrived at my school, where I spent the day having class discussions about Trayvon. Our teachers were trying their best to help us make sense of the national firestorm happening around us. In the following days, some of my friends would come to school dressed in hoodies and create schoolwide petitions for change.

The movement progressed after the deaths of Sandra Bland and Mike Brown, and I was led to blogs that featured videos of uprisings and the victims’ families making distraught pleas during press conferences, photos of the victims of police brutality, and text posts featuring donation links. The violence that could be accessed by the mini computer in my pocket felt like an extension of myself, like being tagged in a photo on Instagram over and over.
