A Pearland mom became a custodian to pay for her teaching education. She's now a teacher at the school she used to clean.
PEARLAND, Texas -- Alma Velero married and started a family with her husband. But she knew that she'd like to become a teacher one day.
While raising her kids and caring for her family, she decided it was time to learn how to teach. But an education isn't free, so on her mother's recommendation, Alma became a custodian at Barbara Cockrell elementary school. While working on her degree, Alma worked her way up the ranks in the school district until she was able to reach her dream.
Peearland ISD director of human resources Shayla McGrew was amazed at her work ethic. McGraw says,"No matter what she does, she's served many roles in the district. She's been a custodian, she's been a receptionist. Now serving as a 3rd grade teacher. It's truly a feat for her. It's been awesome to watch." Cockrell interim principle Jordan Arbuckle says she's glad to have Valero on staff,"Mrs.
Mrs. Valero is just starting her dream, and she's hoping to help her students find and reach their dreams too.
