Martin Gumbel, the 6'10' center headed to Pepperdine University on a full scholarship, has journeyed across the globe to pursue his dreams.
KGTV — SAN DIEGO - Any high school senior looking to go to college next year on a full-ride scholarship is a story of dreams come true.
Gumwel picked up a basketball for the first time four years ago in Kampala Uganda. His family settled in a refugee camp there after fleeing war-torn South Sudan. He was spotted by the Dankind basketball academy, a humanitarian project which mentors and trains young athletes. “I’ve really had an opportunity to meet a lot of great people in my life, so it's a blessing,” Martin Gumwel said.
