The French Open, the season’s second tennis major, will be moving to September from the end of May because of the outbreak of the coronavirus

Roland Garros, where Rafael Nadal of Spain and Ashleigh Barty of Australia are the defending champions, had been due to run May 24 through June 7.

After years of bureaucracy and legal wrangling over an extension of its site, which is the smallest of the four majors, Roland-Garros had recently completed a total refurbishment of its main stadium court, including a retractable roof that will allow it to continue to play during rain and hold night sessions. The event had a total prize money pot of €42.7 million last year.

It also clashes with the Laver Cup, Roger Federer’s team exhibition event, which is scheduled to take place September 25-27 in Boston. Federer is currently on a break to recover from a knee injury, with a return scheduled in June, meaning he would have missed the French Open. But the move to September means the 20-time major singles champion from Switzerland may be able to compete in Paris after all.
