front of the Eiffel tower after the official announcement of the attribution of the Olympic Games 2024 to the city of Paris. , the French government is implementing unprecedented levels of technological surveillance across the city. Hundreds of cameras equipped with artificial intelligence will monitor crowds and public spaces, alarming authorities when they detect suspicious behavior.
The software powering the smart cameras is being developed by private companies contracted by the government. These firms are already training their algorithms on existing surveillance footage to recognize situations similar to Olympic events. Exactly which events will trigger alerts from the AI is detailed in an implementation decree published in late August. The list includes abandoned objects, weapons, unauthorized access to restricted areas, and abnormal crowd movements that could indicate mass panic.
Crucially, facial recognition and any techniques that could identify individuals are explicitly prohibited. The smart cameras will only flag scenarios, not track people across multiple cameras. Human officers will still review all alerts before taking action.
