Saying that ultra-processed foods are like smoking is scaremongering and isn’t backed up by evidence, says expert
Last week saw the release of the latest study lambasting ultra-processed foods as the cause of our dietary ills.are foods that have been industrially refined using products not normally available in your home kitchen, such as emulsifiers, stabilisers and sweeteners, and make upof the UK’s daily diet.
“What that means for people choosing what to eat is that they should really seek a varied, balanced diet and look at the entire dietary pattern, not individual foods. For example, are you eating a mix of fresh and prepared foods? How often do you rely on pre-packaged snacks high in fat, sugar and salt? It is also important to keep in mind that food is not just there to nourish but has many other roles.
“So there are a lot of factors coming together and saying this causes that definitively is very difficult. Even in the most recent paper claiming UPFs have 32 harmful effects., the authors themselves rate most of the evidence as very low quality, simply because there are so many factors that can’t be addressed.
