'Argentina 1985,' 'Chile '76,' 'Huesera: The Bone Woman' and 'El Visitante' head the list...

The 16th annual Latin Wave: New Films from Latin America kicks off April 27 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston with 11 features, including stories set in the past and present and a little local Houston flavor. All told, the event, which runs through April 30, showcases the diversity of voices in contemporary Latin American cinema.

“Argentina, 1985,” a co-production of Argentina and the U.S., is both a taut courtroom drama and a classic underdog story; its storytelling rhythms should ring familiar to anyone who has seen Hollywood dramas about speaking truth to power. But it also has a wry sense of humor, which makes it a perfect vehicle for the subtly mischievous Darín. This is a serious film that also knows how to have a little fun, a valuable quality given the grave subject matter.

Satan isn’t present, but there are some witches, and some crafty nods toward “Rosemary’s Baby.” “Huesera,” however, is very much its own film, and a very assured one at that. It allows us into Valeria’s mind through purely visual means, and it allows enough mystery to cast the proper spell. Cervera is definitely a filmmaker for horror fans to watch.
