BREAKING: Four people were arrested in Wellingborough today
Four people were arrested in Wellingborough today, February 22, as the removal of trees from the town's iconic Walks began after days of protest from residents. Two trees on London Road have so far been felled, with 40 in total expected to be removed.
The Independent councillor for Isebrook launched a campaign to 'Save Our Trees' and a petition that has so far received almost 5,000 signatures. Protestors were out in force yesterday, February 21, but failed to prevent contractors of Bovis Homes from setting up fencing around the 80-100-year-old trees.
Contractors then used chainsaws to fell two of the trees along the walk before most protestors called it a day and left the site. It is not known if any more have been felled since then. "There are two perfectly healthy trees on their backs out there now. There are lots of very upset people for many reasons."
