Fort Lee officials want to block New York's congestion pricing plan, saying traffic detouring around Manhattan's central business district will increase pollution in North Jersey.
Attorney Bruce Nagel announced Nov. 1 that a class-action lawsuit has been filed in U.S. District Court in New Jersey against federal agencies and New York's MTA to overturn approvals for a congestion pricing plan that would charge a fee to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street, citing added pollution.
Fort Lee’s concern is a statement in the congestion pricing environmental analysis that predicted the plan could increase air pollution levels in North Jersey by traffic detouring over the bridge to avoid the congestion zone. The lawsuit seeks creation of a fund “designed to remediate the acknowledged increase in traffic in Bergen County, exacerbating noise and air pollution, the stress to New Jersey’s mass transit infrastructure” and the detrimental health effects to residents living in the vicinity of the bridge and feeder roads to the span.
