Ukraine borders several NATO countries; if Putin is successful in toppling Ukraine, what will be his next step? The Russian president has infused his military and government employees with the goal of expanding Mother Russia to encompass parts of non-NATO border countries, knowing that attacking a NATO ally would trigger a war of enormous proportion. He is aware of Article 5, requiring every NATO ally, including the U.S., to come to the defense of any other under attack. So in 2008, Russia took two provinces of Georgia ; in 2014, Russia illegally annexed Crimea in Ukraine.
