YANGON - Myanmar’s junta has freed a former minister in the ousted government of Aung San Suu Kyi and a well-known writer among political detainees given amnesty to mark the country’s independence day, according to relatives and media.
“Now I have arrived home from prison, but I am not free yet. It is not real freedom if I still need to fear even at home,” Mr Htin Lin Oo said by telephone on Thursday, calling for the release of all political prisoners. Myanmar has been in chaos since the army took power from Ms Suu Kyi’s government on Feb 1, 2021, detaining her and other officials and responding to protests and dissent with brutal force.
She is being held in a jail in the capital Naypyitaw in solitary confinement and the military insists she has received due process by an independent court.
