Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot by a lone gunman while on the campaign trail in the Japanese city of Nara Friday morning.
A spokesperson for the conservative political party confirmed the former prime minister was shot in the chest from behind and was taken away from the scene by ambulance. “We’ve received reports from the scene that he lost consciousness and is in critical condition,” an unidentified government official told NHK. NHK also reports that first responders stated Abe appeared to be in a state of cardiac arrest.
Shortly before 1:00 p.m., Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno gave a press briefing stating Abe’s condition was “currently unknown” and that officials were “continually monitoring” the situation. “Such acts of brutality cannot be tolerated,” Matsuno said in the speech, which was viewed and translated by
