Abe was giving a campaign speech in the Japanese city of Nara when gunshots rang out. Hebefore being transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Local police arrested a Nara resident on suspicion of murder, but haven't yet announced a motive for the shooting.
Abe served from 2006-2007 and again from 2012-2020, and was Japan's longest-serving prime minister. Tributes to Abe have come from leaders around the world.
