As part of a lovely graduation ceremony, the dean of a business school last week encouraged graduates to pursue things that give life relevance outside of the workplace. That’s good, and he probably would have been OK if he had stopped there. Unfortunately, he did not.
At 22, it is impossible to guess what is likely to be the most important achievement in your life. For example, as we age, many people focus on and value family and friends, while educational and employment achievements fade in importance. They are summaries that can’t possibly begin to describe a person’s life. In my alma mater’s alumni magazine, the template is always the same: “Jane Smith, class of , passed away. She worked as a commodities trader at Morgan Stanley, and served on the board of the Montclair Garden Club.”
