Given the flexibility of the MacBook Air, coupled with the increased performance of the ARM-based M1 chipset, the general purpose Mac base looking for a laptop looks to have been satisfied. That leaves the professionals who need the excess power for development and media creation.
The question comes down to a balance of power and portability. The new MacBook Pro laptops have the portability, but then so does the record breaking M1 MacBook Air. If your main priority is power, then the iMac Pro is going to deliver far more than the laptops ever can.
Mobility is still a prized resource, but it’s not the only resource. Apple Silicon has unlocked the “more than good enough" performance right down to the entry-level laptops. If your first need is power, then its time to consider just how important mobility is to you, how often you used it in the last year, and if you already have that option.
