Paul Richardson has been counting down to the game against West Ham on a Nottingham Forest calendar in his room
An 83-year-old Forest fanatic has had his wish to attend one last City Ground game come true - fulfilling a promise made to his granddaughter by taking her along. Paul Richardson, who spent decades working for the Nottingham Evening Post, suffered a stroke last April and has been a resident of the Harrier House Care Home in Hucknall since September.
The care home contacted the club late last year and within 24 hours, Forest responded and eventually confirmed that they would offer Mr Richardson and his family an executive box with hospitality. Since being told about it on his birthday in January, Mr Richardson has been counting down to the big day on a Nottingham Forest calendar in his room.
"I lived in a little village called Owthorpe next to Cropwell Bishop and I went with some lads from the village to see them play Stockport County in the cup." Mr Richardson also saw Forest triumph in the 1959 FA Cup final at Wembley against Luton Town and he is still able to reel off the team sheet from that day in a matter of seconds.
Despite having five granddaughters, 19-year-old Izzy is the only one Mr Richardson has managed to persuade to follow Forest and she jokes that she has had to go through a lot more "suffering" than her granddad. With Forest having only won one of their five last league games, Mr Richardson says he is "hoping against hope" for Izzy to see a victory.
