Since the start of the pandemic, UnitedHealth Group has continued to adapt to better serve at-risk patients. Here’s how Sponsored by Teradata

UHG currently uses Vivify to serve 10,000 high-risk patients, and the program took on new significance during COVID-19, when at-home monitoring became critical for older and immuno-compromised patients who couldn’t risk infection by visiting the hospital.

UHG’s solution was to begin mailing her prescriptions on a routine schedule. “One of the things that we find in medicine is that many times, it's not the knowledge of what to do but the interference of social determinants such as fear or lack of transportation,” says Dr. Migliori. “So half of what we do is medical, and half is social.”In medicine, uncertainty is dangerous. Hospitals need to have an idea of how many ICU beds, ventilators and attending medics they’ll need at any given moment.

By building a new tool specifically for COVID-19, UHG was able to run surge predictions for the roughly 700 health systems it serves. It draws on county-level infection and mortality reports, hospital admissions data and census demographic information to help hospitals brace for impact. UHG determined, for instance, that 17% of people admitted for COVID-19 would end up on ventilatory support, in general.

Even before COVID-19 hit, data analytics powered many of UHG’s most exciting initiatives. Through the company’s carefully managed Unified Data Warehouse, different divisions have been sharing information that empowers quick and decisive decision making. Now, as the healthcare industry considers how to prepare for a second wave of the coronavirus and recover from its lasting impact, UHG’s data repository and its commitment to building on it have been key.
