Having long ago given up his dream of becoming a surgeon, Josh Richardson has found a niche operating off the Spurs’ bench.

Josh Richardson arrived at the University of Tennessee in the fall of 2011 with dreams different from other incoming freshmen on basketball scholarships.Richardson went to college to be a student and an athlete, in that order.
He spent four years studying at Tennessee — a rarity in itself among the current NBA player pool — before becoming a second-round pick of Miami in 2015.In the years since, during a well-traveled career that included additional stops in Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston and now San Antonio, Richardson has carved a name as a savvy veteran capable of incendiary scoring jags.
Heading into Friday’s game against the 76ers, one of his old employers, Richardson has averaged 11.4 in 60 appearances with the Spurs.“He is instant offense coming off the bench,” said Spurs rookie Malaki Branham, who considers Richardson a role model. As the second-oldest player on the league’s third-youngest roster, Richardson harbors value to the Spurs as a veteran voice and mentor.With this year’s Feb. 9 trade deadline fast approaching, Richardson and fellow vets Doug McDermott and Jakob Poeltl can expect to hear their names oft mentioned as targets for contending teams.
