Reagan running back Cole Pryor is helped off the field Friday night, Nov. 11, 2022 at Comalander Stadium during the Rattlers’ game against the New Braunfels Unicorns.SAN ANTONIO — Playing through adverse circumstances, the New Braunfels Unicorns pulled off 17-13 victory against Reagan in a Class 6A Division I first-round playoff on Friday at Comalander Stadium.
“We had some good news today,” New Braunfels coach Glenn Mangold said after the game. “He’s improving in some areas, but he still has a long road ahead of him. But we are encouraged by some of the things that happened today.”Sophomore Clayton Namkin took over at quarterback. The Unicorns utilized a rugged running attack to aid Namkin, who had completed 7 of 15 passing for 94 yards before Friday.
The Unicorns totaled 183 total yards. The Unicorns limited Reagan to 264 yards. Senior linebacker Garnett Gonzalez was involved in several big hits including one that knocked sophomore running back Cole Pryor out of the game after seven carries for 38 yards. Pryor rushed for more than 200 yards the week before in a victory against Johnson.
“I saw a green light and I started running,” Johnson said “I saw my teammates blocking my way for me and securing my way to the end zone. It was a big momentum-changer. It helped us out to get the game flowing again.”The Unicorns took advantage of several Rattlers’ miscues to take a 12-0 halftime lead.
Reagan caught a break on the Unicorns’ next possession when a bad snap on a punt attempt set up the Rattlers on New Braunfels’ 10.
