“He’s a bit looser than most,” Good said with a laugh. “He’s not the archetype linebacker in terms of personality. But there’s not a moment that gets too big for him. He plays loose, and he has fun.”It’s that atypical combination of traits that makes Lucas the heart of Lake Central’s defense and its unquestioned leader. A team captain, he led Lake Central with 84 tackles — eight for loss — last year and is back on top through two games this season.
But Lucas’ unique personality shines through in moments like the second half of a game against Providence Catholic of New Lenox, Illinois, on Friday, when Lake Central tried to rally in a 28-21 loss. Indeed, Lucas used to be one of those kids in the crowd at Lake Central games, often watching his older brother, Nick, a 2017 graduate who played at St. Francis. Nick Lucas was a linebacker and wore No. 35 at Lake Central. That’s Jeffrey Lucas’ number too.“It helps other people,” Nick Lucas said.
