San Antonio resident and retired astronaut Eileen Collins talks about being one of...
On Saturday at 10 a.m., Collins will be a featured speaker at the Boerne Book & Arts Fest, located on the Mile at Main Plaza. She will take part in a “Women and the Space Program” panel with Ginger Kerrick, Estella Hernández Gillette and NASA Johnson Space Center historian and author Jennifer Ross-Nazzal, who wrote “Making Space for Women.”
Collins was a fourth-grader in Elmira, N.Y., when she decided she wanted to become an astronaut. At the time, all the astronauts were men. Collins was determined to be one of the first female astronauts, but she didn’t share her dream with anyone — it was a mission she kept to herself. There weren’t many books on astronauts, so she sought out science fiction fare by Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Military history was her favorite topic.
