There were severe storms overnight
A flood alert has been issued in several areas of Nottinghamshire following a heavy thunderstorm overnight. Much of the county saw heavy rain and lightning in the early hours of Monday, September 5, which more thunder forecast for the rest of the week.
The Environment Agency has now said small rivers and streams in parts of Nottinghamshire could be affected by the heavy rainfall and rise rapidly. The agency has therefore issued a flood alert for areas along the River Maun, including Mansfield, Edwinstowe, Ollerton and Milton. The agency said: "Given the unpredictable nature of thunderstorms, there is low confidence in the locations and impacts of rainfall at this point. Areas most at risk are low lying agricultural land, roads and footpaths close to small rivers and streams."Water levels could rise rapidly and potentially generate deep, fast flows. We are closely monitoring the situation."
People have been told to avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan their driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers. It comes as the Met Office forecasts thunder again for Nottingham at 8pm on Monday, September 5. Describing the outlook in the East Midlands for the rest of the week, the meteorological agency says: "Remaining unsettled with showers and a risk of thunderstorms throughout the period. Windy at times on Wednesday. Temperatures rather warm, becoming near normal by Friday."
