The incident caused chaos all morning
Piles of sawdust were accidentally dumped across the road surface leaving it unsafe for travel. Two lanes of the motorway were closed between junction 31 and junction 31A near Samlesbury and Preston.
The incident occurred shortly before 8.30am and motorists were hit by delays of up to an hour as traffic hit a near standstill in the surrounding area. The six miles of congestion also caused a knock on effect of 20 minutes delays and 3 miles of congestion on the M61 northbound between J9 and the M6.Specialist cleaners were called to the scene but the clean up operation took several hours and delays of more than half an hour were still affecting the area into the afternoon.
Explaining the cause of the issue, a lancashire-constabulary>Lancashire Constabulary spokesperson this morning said: "M6 northbound just prior to J31a - 2 of 4 lanes currently closed due to HGV partially losing cargo of sawdust after heavy braking to prevent collision. We expect the partial closure to remain for a few hours whilst the cleanup continues, your patience is appreciated."
