Once the numbers are spread across an extra one million Canadians, it emerges that – from the perspective of the average Canadian — the economy has actually been shrinking for much of the last 12 months.has referred to as a “per capita recession” — a phenomenon that has described the Canadian economy since at least the middle of 2022.

And according to the federal government, they’re already planning on keeping this going well into the foreseeable future. The most recent federal budget projected that GDP growth would average two per cent over the next five years.Article content This was something that Ottawa could at least acknowledge as recently as 2022. That year’s budget even included a chart documenting the OECD’s dire predictions about Canada ranking dead last in terms of GDP growth per capita by 2060.

As noted by the Business Council of B.C., when Canada’s 2023 budget hit the printers, the text not only omitted the OECD projection, but failed to include any mention whatsoever of “real GDP per capita.”Justice Minister David Lametti is out. So is Marco Mendicino, the Public Safety Minister who catastrophically fumbled everything from knowing basic facts about firearms to reading his emails on occasion.
