One of those running to be the first ever East Midlands Mayor says the cost of next year's election could be at least £2 million. It comes as Nottingham City Council says that up to £900,000 will be spent on printing and posting leaflets about May's election.
The deal creating the new devolved authority was signed last year by the leaders of Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council. New documents have revealed that the latter authority is expected to oversee the East Midlands Mayor election next year, with its chief executive appointed as the returning officer.The East Midlands Combined Authority itself will eventually oversee future elections once it legally comes into force next year.
In terms of why £900,000 was being spent on leaflets, Mr Bradley told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "It's a one-off cost as it's a new thing that most people, truthfully, aren't even aware of. won't happen in future elections I don't think, but it's a nationally prescribed rule for a new body like this and not within our gift to change."
