Firefighters making progress containing two East County fires [Breaking]
Firefighters on Wednesday were making progress containing two East County fires that charred nearly 50 acres Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
The Blackwood Fire, which ignited about 11:40 a.m. east of Boulevard and charred 37 acres, was about 60 percent contained, Cal Fire officials said on Twitter. The Wildcat fire that started around 4:10 p.m. southeast of Ramona and burned just over 12 acres, was 90 percent contained. Fire officials initially said the fire had scorched 20 acres, but the crew of an aircraft with the state’s Fire Integrated Real-time Intelligence System was able to provide a more accurate estimate. The Blackwood fire began near Black Wood Road and Old Mine Road north of Live Oak Springs, fire officials said.
The Wildcat fire ignited on Barona Road near Giant Paintball, a paintball center, Cal Fire said in a tweet Tuesday. Flames could be seen speeding uphill, and officials were initially concerned the blaze could grow to 100 acres. The flames briefly threatened nearby homes and evacuation warnings were issued to residents in the San Diego Country Estates community, but no structures were damaged.
