The third and final day of the 2022 Fur Rendezvous Open World Championship Sled Dog Race was canceled due to icy conditions on the trails through the city.
Musher Grant Beck and his dog team work to crest Cordova Street as they head toward the finish line of the Fur Rendezvous World Championship Sled Dog Races in downtown Anchorage on Friday, Feb. 25, 2022.
The Alaskan Sled Dog and Racing Association said trail conditions had deteriorated to the point where racing wasn’t in the best interest of the dogs. Race organizers said the trail, which extends 25 miles from downtown Anchorage through the city to Far North Bicentennial Park and back, was covered with snow but the freeze-and-thaw weather pattern worsened trail conditions making it dangerous for dogs.
