Like many people, much of my time in the numerous Covid lockdowns was spent binging the telly treats I’d not previously made time for.
After busting through Narcos with aplomb, and Breaking Bad with gusto, I was in dire need of something to fill the void these dark crime dramas had left behind.
Firstly though, the topper of this week’s bill is new satirical teen sex comedy, Bottoms. Following the tale of two protagonists looking to hook up with cheerleaders, the thought of this one may get those eyes rolling, or at least start a yearning for the ‘innocence’ of American Pie.Released: November 3
An unapologetically profane, off-kilter script earns extra credit by pummelling characters to bloody pulps a la Fight Club under the auspices of teaching female students how to protect themselves from the harassment and unwanted attention that awaits them when they graduate. Fellow outcast Hazel volunteers to become club secretary and fearful classmates including Annie , Stella-Rebecca and Sylvie answer the call to arms.Unfortunately, Jeff and second-in-command Tim feel threatened by the heady scent of female empowerment and they choose a blunt force approach to undermine the club’s popularity.
Two backpackers experience a snapshot of life in the Australian Outback that doesn’t feature in any guidebook in a tense thriller directed by Kitty Green that lacks a killer final punch. They play American best friends Hanna and Liv respectively, who run out of money in Sydney as they backpack around Australia.
The young women bite their tongues, determined to get enough money to move on by earning tips from locals including Matty , Teeth and menacing Dolly .
