Ella Jones, a Ferguson City Council member, became the first black woman to be elected Mayor in the city
where the police shooting of unarmed black teenager Mike Brown sparked protests in 2014 and catapulted the Black Lives Matter movement to a national stage.ASSOCIATED PRESSJones’ victory came amid a backdrop of ongoing protests in Ferguson, and in cities across the U.S., following the death of George Floyd in police custody last Monday.
The 65-year-old, who is also a church pastor, won 54% of the vote and will succeed Republican James Knowles III, Ferguson Mayor since 2011. Jones said she is committed to police department reform, and said she, as well as her opponent Heather Robinette, supported peaceful protests. Jones was first elected to Ferguson City Council in 2015, becoming its first black member. She is both the first African American and woman to be elected the city’s mayor.
She told St Louis Public Radio’s Jason Rosenbaum that one of the first things she would like to do is meet with the Department of Justice and St Louis County to help Ferguson rebuild economically as it emerges from the coronavirus pandemic.Getty Images
