New rules proposed by the Biden administration would make airlines pay for your hotel room and meals when you are stranded because your flight was canceled for reasons within their control.
New rules the Department of Transportation and Biden administration are pushing would require airlines to compensate passengers for hotel rooms and meals when costs are incurred because the airlines canceled flights for reasons within their control. WASHINGTON – would announce the start of the rulemaking process Monday.
The goal is to put in place regulations that for the first time would force airlines to compensate passengers beyond their ticket refunds. The new rules would cover expenses, such as room, meals and rebooking another flight, that passengers incur if the airline causes a cancellation or significant delay.Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement
. “This rule would, for the first time in U.S. history, propose to require airlines to compensate passengers and cover expenses such as meals, hotels and rebooking in cases where the airline has caused a cancellation or significant delay.” The Transportation Department has been pushing airlines to agree to such changes, with some success. The 10 largest airlines guarantee meals and free rebooking on the same airline and nine guarantee hotel accommodation as part of the Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard, the Transportation Department said.
