“The closure of this facility, combined with a growing list of other protein plants that have shuttered across our industry, is pushing our country perilously close to the edge in terms of our meat supply,” Sullivan said in a statement. “It is impossible to keep our grocery stores stocked if our plants are not running.”
Adding to the worries are worker advocates who are warning of far worse to come, citing the hundreds of essential food workers across the country who are sick and unable to work because of the novel virus. “Despite the fact there has been tremendous consolidation of large food companies over the least 20 years, there has been an equal amount of innovation as well,” says Brown. “This diversification should serve us well in this time when our food system is working overtime to keep up with today’s stockpiling of food at the household level. These facilities also tend to be located in geographies outside of major population centers that are experiencing the most rapid spread of COVID-19.
