Archie Gray has played 90 minutes seven times in the last three weeks for club and country and Daniel Farke will be considering a change as Leeds United prepare to take on Huddersfield Town on Saturday
Archie Gray needs a rest. That has been made abundantly clear over the last week and Daniel Farke has a decision to make as Leeds United look to bounce back to winning ways on Saturday lunchtime against Huddersfield Town.
That extraordinarily high workload appears to have taken its toll on the 17-year-old, who looked weary and fatigued as the full-time whistle approached at the bet365 Stadium, just as he did last weekend at Carrow Road. Gray is still just 17, of course, and while minutes are essential to his progression, spending too much time in the red can be counterproductive.
Ayling is the more natural right-back of the two, of course, and while he has had his moments this season he has generally looked steady enough, while Shackleton picked up plaudits for his performances at full-back before suffering a shoulder injury at the start of the month. Both would be fine options, then, but Farke has been reluctant to turn their way for some reason.
The Tottenham Hotspur loanee made just one fleeting appearance off the bench before picking up a knee ligament injury and as of Tuesday afternoon, when Farke gave an injury update, he was on track but hadn’t restarted team training. As such, Spence will be at least another couple of weeks away from being considered available to start and it seems as though he is the most likely option to take the right-back spot on moving into the hectic festive period and beyond.
