The world of football will celebrate the life of Sir Bobby Charlton at his funeral in Manchester.
Over the course of his 17-year career Sir Bobby Charlton lifted trophies, won awards, broke records and thoroughly earned his status as a legend of the beautiful game. During his time at Manchester United he recorded 758 appearances and 249 goals, and joined the Red Devils in winning three league titles, one FA Cup and a European Cup. His finest hour at club level came in May 1968 when he captained United to European Cup success at Wembley, scoring twice in the 4-1 win over Benfica.
He famously missed the post-match celebrations to conduct a solitary remembrance for the friends he had lost in the Munich air disaster 10 years earlier. From 1958 to 1970 he played for England, and achieved 106 caps, a record-breaking 49 goals, the famous 1966 World Cup win, and a Ballon d’Or. Charlton of course also played a starring role in England's famous 1966 World Cup-winning team. Under Sir Alf Ramsey's management, he scored twice in the semi-final win over Portugal.
