Mr Griffiths recalled how the site’s asbestos register was a ‘controlled document’ and not widely available to staff. He said refurbishment work at the buildings would periodically lead to new discoveries of asbestos in the fabric of the building as units and departments were moved to different places.
Trucks and trollies used to move files around knocked into asbestos panels on corridors, close to the main corridor, the court heard, but Mr Griffiths said management were not ‘cavalier’ about exposing employees to asbestos. The court heard how a document was circulated to some staff in July 1988, highlighting possible exposure to asbestos.
After much deliberation, Senior Coroner Alan Wilson said it was possible that she was exposed to asbestos during her working life at Norcross but said there was no more than a possibility that her illness was the result of exposure to asbestos at her place of work. He said: “It seems to me that it is possible that she was exposed to asbestos during her working life at Norcross.”
