LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio -- When Kristeen Sawyers donated a $25,000 check to Lorain County Sheriff Phil Stammitti Sept. 13, the sheriff and the whole department were taken aback.
According to a news release, the money was a donation from the family of Elyria Police Sgt. James Kerstetter, who was killed in the line of duty on March 15, 2010, after a domestic call in the city. Sawyers stated that the family wanted to make the donation specifically to the K-9 program, in hopes that it will fund the purchase of a new dog.
