Harry Colledge died after he was thrown from his bike when he rode over a six inch-deep pothole

The family of a man whose death was caused by Lancashire County Council's failure to fix a massive pothole has said she is considering taking legal action against the council. Keen cyclist Harry Colledge suffered an unsurvivable brain injury when he was thrown over the handlebars of his bike after riding through a six inch-deep crack in Winmarleigh village, north of Garstang.

Following a two-day inquest, held last week at Preston Coroner's Court, Area Coroner Kate Bisset announced that she would be issuing a formal report after she concluded that Harry's death was preventable. The coroner said that, should further action not be taken, there remains a potential for future deaths. The inquest heard how the crack in Island Lane had been reported to the council's highways department four months before Harry's death.

Ms Bisset said: "Mr Colledge's family are well within their rights to feel outraged at the continued refusal of LCC to accept the glaringly obvious with regards to the ongoing presence of this crack." Harry's wife, Val, and his son Jonathan, both attended the inquest. After the hearing Jonathan described the crack in Island Lane as "the Grand Canyon of Lancashire" and, in response to the council's "unbelievable position" that the defect had somehow disappeared and then re-appeared, suggested it was "the case of the vanishing valley".
