Wilson was born in Birmingham, spent his formative years in Mobile, and graduated from the University of Alabama with degrees in biology in 1950. He continued his studies at Harvard University, where he was a professor for 40 years. He traveled the globe conducting research and lecturing, won more than 150 awards including the National Medal of Science and two Pulitzer Prizes. He wrote more than 30 books and 400 scientific research papers during his lengthy career.
“He made his first significant scientific discovery in Mobile, Alabama, at age 14 as the first person in the nation to identify the invading South American fire ant, discovered hundreds of new species of insects, had more than 100 species of insects, birds, and bats discovered by other scientists named in his honor,” said Gregory, reading the city’s proclamation.
