Fall Out Boy blew away a sold out Leeds Arena like the good old days
There was a moment, halfway through Fall Out Boy's Leeds gig where lead singer Patrick Stump - who gives off the energy of 'Ed Sheeran with an electric guitar', stopped the music to talk to the audience. The usually shy leading man told us the gimmick for this tour isn't shooting him from a cannon or dropping him from the ceiling, but stripping back everything and just putting him on a piano, leaving him totally exposed.
Other bands probably have bigger sets, flashier lights, crazier 'experiences' on stage. But they don't have Patrick Stump, who has more than an air of pop punk's answer to Elton John with the way he owns the room from behind the baby grand - and not just when he's ably deputising Elton's vocals on Save Rock & Roll. That's not why most came to this sell-out tour though. They came for crowd pleasers and Fall Out Boy didn't disappoint.
Fall Out Boy's latest album - So Much Stardust - samples the line 'It's better to burn out than to fade away', and for a time it looked like Fall Out Boy were in danger of one, then the other, after their glorious and swaggering return with Save Rock & Roll, followed by American Beauty/American Psycho went a little off course with the less successful rappy/electro infused Mania.
