The specific rule says light-duty cars – like sedans, SUVs and trucks – would be required to limit emissions to 85 grams per mile by 2032, down from 170 grams per mile in 2027. Medium-duty cars – like big trucks and vans – would be required to hit 274 grams per mile in 2032, down from 461 grams per mile in 2027.
Under the rule, car companies will be required to report the average emissions associated with all the cars they sell. Companies that do not meet the new limits would have to pay fines that could cost billions of dollars.the rule is expected to avoid 7.2 billion tons of carbon emissions through 2055 and provide nearly $100 billion of annual net benefits.This is the latest move on the federal level, but states are taking their own initiatives when it comes to gas cars.
If you already drive a gas car, you will not have to stop driving it or get rid of it, and you can even still buy used gas cars. The new rule just bans manufacturers and dealerships from producing and selling new gas cars, which will ultimately pressure companies to ramp up production of zero-emission vehicles while phasing out production of gas ones.
