As Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson face illegal annexation, doubts have been raised as to just how much of the territory Russian forces control.
It shows that despite Putin's false assertion of control over the regions, Russian forces do not even occupy all of the territories that the federation has laid claim to.
Furthermore, most of the north of Zaporizhzhia, including the eponymous capital, are still outside of Russia's control, while Melitopol and areas around it remain engaged in Ukrainian partisan warfare. Nonetheless, the Kremlin has claimed the seizure of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia under the Russian Federation, even as Ukrainian forces stage counteroffensives.
