Retailers including John Lewis and Boots have signed up to a scheme to share information and gather evidence
Facial recognition tech will be used to catch prolific shoplifters under plans to “create a hostile environment” for repeat thieves, the government has announced.
Retailers signed up to the initiative, called Pegasus, have pledged £30,000 a year for two years to improve intelligence sharing and be trained on how to collect evidence.John Lewis, the Co-op, Marks and Spencer, Boots and Primark are among 13 retailers funding the launch of the project. Where CCTV is available the police will check it again the Police National Database using facial recognition technology.
Some 365,164 offences were recorded in the year to June 2023, up a quarter on the previous 12 months.
