They were all given lengthy jail terms for their crimes

These individuals are known as Nottinghamshire's most infamous criminals and each one received long prison sentences for their crimes. Colin Gunn was sentenced to life in prison in 2006, with a minimum term of 35 years, for planning the murder of John and Joan Stirland in Trusthorpe, Lincolnshire.

Even though the official cause of Jamie's death was pneumonia, it was believed that he had been on a downward spiral of drink and drugs ever since he saw a gunman shoot and kill his best friend, Marvyn Bradshaw, outside the Sporting Chance pub, in Bulwell, in August 2003. The person who fired the gun was Mrs Stirland's son, Michael O'Brien who was later jailed for life.

On Sunday, August 8, 2004, Mrs Stirland phoned the police in Nottingham to say there was a stranger outside their bungalow the night before. That information was sent on the same day - by fax - to the police in Lincolnshire. But they didn't know about the danger the Stirlands were in, so they didn't think it was urgent.

John Russell, from Northcote Way, Bulwell, and Michael McNee, with no fixed address, were both sentenced to at least 30 years and 25 years respectively for the same crime. An inquest found that mistakes made by Nottinghamshire Police played a part in the couple's deaths, but Lincolnshire Police were not at fault.

Dawes told the court while doing agency work: "I wasn't expecting to get locked up. It was a big shock, to be honest."Dawes also mentioned he had spent more than nine years in Category A prisons and been "shipped around the country for nine-and-half years". In his current situation, he can't open a bank account and works for 74 hours each week "just to get my head above water".

"He now has no assets and no means of satisfying the £18,000," the judge declared, adding: "I accept that if he had the assets now he would gladly give them up in order to get rid of this very difficult problem". It was this fear that led four former employees, who wanted to leave, to turn to the police rather than face the consequences. These drug runners - who worked for Dawes between 2000 and 2003 - were crucial to his conviction. All four were protected by the Witness Protection Programme, and each had their own terrifying story to share.

Later, a forensic expert determined that Katie's body was placed between January 1 and January 6, 2005, while Zoe's was between December 30, 2004, and January 4, 2005. Ellen was found on January 25. Approximately seven days later, Martin lured Zoe Pennick to the same location where she was killed. He lured her with the promise of selling 2,000 cigarettes, but then he strangled her. "He said it was hard and she didn't want to die," a witness recalled.

Ellen's body was discovered in a burnt-out squat on January 25, 2005, although she was not the first victim to be killed. The area was a popular spot for homeless people in the city because some of the flats, which were set to be knocked down, still had gas and electricity. Within a few days, the statements from other homeless people led police to charge both Martin and Ashley with murder. But there were rumours among the homeless that Ellen might not have been the only victim.

When investigators arrived to carefully remove her body, they didn't know Zoe's body was also hidden nearby, under two metres away from Katie's. The complexity was in recognising multiple deaths linked to several suspects. The effort enlisted 40 dedicated officers at its peak, collecting hundreds of helpful statements from the public.
