CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the company is now Metaverse first, not Facebook first.
Mark Zuckerberg with a bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce on his shelves during the keynote presentation for Facebook Connect.At a Thursday event showcasing the company's broad virtual reality ambitions, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook will now be part of an umbrella company named Meta. Divisions under Meta will be Facebook , WhatsApp, Instagram, Oculus, Portal and others. The announcement was made at Facebook's Connect conference.
The keynote presentation at the conference showed Facebook's plans for various parts of the metaverse: attending a VR concert and afterparty, or going surfing as a VR character, fencing or pingpong in augmented reality as well as new gaming options for Oculus. Facebook is also is betting that people will use virtual reality for work and school. Zuckerberg suggested that if VR meetings allow us to skip a flight for a work meeting it will be a boon to the environment.
