Facebook has officially launched Reels, a copycat version of TikTok that pairs with Instagram.
The announcement came via Facebook and Instagram blog posts, revealing that the app will be introduced globally Monday. The app should appear in the App Store and the Google Play Store for you to download. Instagram called the Reels app"a new way to create and discover short, entertaining videos on Instagram." The app works almost identically to TikTok. You record and edit 15-second video clips set to music, and you can add an array of effects and filters.Facebook status:"Reels gives people new ways to express themselves, discover more of what they love on Instagram, and help anyone with the ambition of becoming a creator take center stage," Instagram said in a blog post.
Reels is available for users whose accounts are set to private as well as those with public profiles. If your Instagram account is public, the video can appear on the app's Explore section. The news comes as the Trump administration threatens to ban TikTok in the U.S. The app is popular with U.S. teens.
TikTok is owned by ByteDance, which has faced scrutiny over its ties to China. The app could avoid being blocked if it's sold to a U.S.-based firm.
