U.S. regulators are warning airlines about a new risk on Boeing 737 Max jets.

FILE- In this Feb. 5, 2018, file photo a Boeing 737 MAX 7 is displayed during a debut for employees and media of the new jet in Renton, Wash. U.S. regulators are warning airlines to limit the use of an anti-icing system on Boeing 737 Max jets in dry air to avoid overheating engine-housing parts, which could cause them to break away from the plane.

The FAA said if the engine inlet gets too hot, parts of the housing could come off and strike a window, causing decompression and a hazard to passengers in window seats. Boeing said overheating of the inlets — which are made by Boeing, not CFM — can only happen under “very specific" conditions and wasn't known until recently.

The Federal Aviation Administration has deemed the risk to the public serious enough to implement the order within 15 days, without public comment. If the engine inlet becomes too hot, there is a possibility of parts breaking away and striking a window, posing a decompression risk and endangering passengers in window seats.
