Lewis Hamilton's off-track work to expand diversity is paying dividends, write Formula_Nerds ✍️ F1
The Hamilton Commission has been inspiring the Extreme E Championship to increase diversity by recruiting more diverse staff.As the only black Formula One driver, Lewis Hamilton has spearheaded the push for change. He createdto ascertain why in motorsport certain groups were under-represented. This also applies to the STEM subjects as well.
Gade said “Extreme E has got two programmes that encourage all of that.” She highlighted the driver line-up element, which means each team has one male driver and one female drivers – “a 50-50 split.” Gade then referred to a plan to increase under-represented backgrounds in the paddock.She detailed aspect of the plan that would create more opportunities from within the paddock, keeping in line with minimising a team’s carbon footprint.
Gade also commented on the perception of motorsport in general. She highlighted that it tends to be perceived as “quite elitist” with only the wealthy being able to get into it. Reiterating this was not the case, Gade said “there’s lots of different ways of getting into motorsport” especially with the plan detailed above.Teena Gade, McLaren’s Performance and Systems Engineer also spoke about these schemes.
